Dear Parents and Families,

I trust that all of you are enjoying the final, fleeting days of summer.  So I say this with some caution, Welcome to another wonderful school year at Wakelee Elementary School!  Every summer gives us all a chance to rest and relax, travel a bit, enjoy various outdoor activities and reconnect with our children and extended families.  I hope that this summer has been everything that you wanted it to be and that all of you take advantage of the few days we have remaining this summer.  My family and I plan to do so as well.

This new school year has brought some changes to our school.  Our school has gone through a much needed upgrade and facelift this summer.  In addition to our usual summer cleaning, a number of our classrooms have been painted.  We have received some new technological equipment that will enhance our technology department and the way we communicate with you and your children, both in school and afterschool.  Our fire alarm system has been upgraded throughout the building, security measures and practices have been tightened, and the lighting system throughout the building has been revamped.  I would like to personally thank Mr. Bly and his crew for the hard work and time they put in this summer to get the building ready for all of us next week.

This school year has also brought some changes to our staff.  Mrs. Lisa Klemenz will be returning to us this year.  She is coming from Grade One at Alcott School and will teach First Grade for us.  Mrs. Mary Rodrigues will also be part of our First Grade team, coming down a few grades from Grade Five last year here at Wakelee.  Miss Jennifer Marino will return to Grade Three for this year, moving up from Grade Two last year.  Mrs. Donna Calabro will be moving up from Grade Four to fill in one of the openings on our Fifth Grade team.  The other spot will be filled by Mrs. Joanne Lacedra, who is moving up from Grade Two at Wakelee.  Mr. Joe Cornelio will be our new Computer Technology Teacher, so he is remaining with us, but in a different capacity.  Lastly, we say farewell to Mrs. Shelley Longo who was our Speech and Language Pathologist last year, but we are excited to bring on board Ms. Raquel Madar as our new Speech and Language Pathologist.  Are those enough changes for you?  Fortunately, most of these changes come with very familiar faces to our Wakelee School community, so I expect to have another great school year ahead!

The first day of school for students is Wednesday, August 28th.  This will be a full school day (8:55 – 3:20) for all students except for Kindergarten students.

Kindergarten Students will be dismissed from school at 11:45 a.m. for the first week of school and no lunch will be served for K students this week (three-day week).  The following week (week of Labor Day), Kindergarten students will be dismissed from school at 12:45 p.m. (lunch will be served).  The week of September 9th, will be the first full week AND the first full-days of school (8:55 – 3:20) for Kindergartners.  Our Kindergarten Orientation will be held on Monday, August 26 at 1:30 p.m. in the Wakelee School Cafeteria.  Students and parents will meet their teachers, visit their classrooms, view a brief video on bus safety and enjoy a refreshing snack.  All students are invited and encouraged to take their first bus ride home this afternoon, as we will dismiss family members just prior sending the buses home for the day.

Upcoming Events:  On Friday, August 30th, Wakelee will be celebrating a “Back to School” Night at the New Britain Rock Cats.  This is a great way to end the summer and return back to school and reconnect with friends and families (see other attachment).  I hope to see everyone there!

Our annual Curriculum Night will be held on Wednesday, September 11th at 6:30 p.m. at the school.  This is a great opportunity for parents to meet their children’s teachers and learn about the year’s events, course of study and other ways to get involved in their children’s education.

PTO:  Our PTO is a valuable and vital part of our Wakelee Community and they are instrumental in extending and enhancing our student learning beyond the classroom.  The activities and field trips that they organize and sponsor for our children are both educational and fun.  Please consider being part of our wonderful PTO, or at the very least, support and participate in our family-oriented events throughout the school year.  PTO Meetings are scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m., with the exception of September.  The first PTO Meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 4th in the school cafeteria at 7:00 p.m.

As I begin my third year here at Wakelee, I can truly say that each year has been a pleasure and privilege to work here.  I am looking forward to another terrific year working with wonderful staff members and fantastic students, and I cannot wait to get started!  I feel that our school has an outstanding reputation, and that is due in large part to the commitment that you give as parents and the values of hard work, responsibility and citizenship you instill in your children.  These values coupled with our dedicated and caring staff truly make Wakelee a special place for our children.  As always, I value your input and look forward to finding ways I can help you in meeting the varying needs of our students.  I am very much looking forward to the start of another school year here at Wakelee!  I hope to see many of you next week.

Sincerely,

Robert Nagashima

Principal
