The guidance department at Tyrrell Middle School dedicated the month of November to stop bullying and harassment, both in and out of school. As a follow up to the activities in November, the department organized a presentation for the entire student body on internet safety and cyber bullying.  Detective Peter Morgan of the Waterbury Police Computer Crime Unit visited the school to discuss the dangers and consequences of posting too much personal information online. He showed several videos about firsthand accounts of victims of cyber stalking, cyber bullying and the legal ramifications of participating in such acts. Students were also given helpful tips on how to protect themselves from becoming victims. They were encouraged to set all settings to “private” whenever possible, and to only communicate with people who they have met in person. At the end of the presentation students were allowed to ask questions. Every day, school counselors are met with the emotional drama and conflict as a result of cyber bullying or cyber stalking. Texting, instant messages, Facebook, and blogs can be a useful tool, but they can also be devastating to students and their families if used inappropriately. We hope to encourage students to use technology in a safe way, seek help of an adult if they get uncomfortable with someone online, and to limit the amount of personal information they put on the internet.
