The Student Transition Education Program ( S.T.E.P. ) is designed to provide a continuum of support to students in need of additional strategies that ensure academic success. To be recommended for the program, a general education teacher must present data on the particular student to CORE ( Committee on Retention and Education ) team or placement can be obtained through the Planning and Placement Team ( PPT ) process. Once it is decided that a student will benefit from the additional academic support, there is an individual success plan developed to meet their needs.
The needs of students in STEP can be met through a variety of measures. Academic needs can be fulfilled through co-taught classes, general education in class support, leaning center, and study skills class. Emotional needs can be met through the group counseling sessions and/or individual counseling sessions. If deemed helpful, a time out pass may be issued to individual students allowing them to learn how to identify stressful situations and how to appropriately remove themselves from them.
The final benefit for students who are part of the STEP program is the Career Work Experience component. Period eight two days a week, the students are engaged in exploration of potential career choices. There are various volunteer opportunities within the community.
