This past weekend our robotics team competed at the CT Regional in Hartford.  At the event there were 64 teams from all over the Northeast.  Many believe that this regional is the hardest in the world.

During this event our team was very visible because our students volunteered to run activities.  Students from our school worked at a LEGO build area for younger kids and also helped at the information tables.  It was very nice to see the level of support our students gave to this program and to the event.

In the competition itself our team excelled.  The team finished the qualifying rounds ranked 6th out of a field of 64 teams.  They were tied for the best record of 9-1.  During the elimination rounds the team beat the 4th seeded alliance and the 1st seeded alliance on their way to the championship round.  The team narrowly lost in the championship round.  On the field the team was lead Kyle Twarog, Tom Lourenco, Kevin Roberts, and Scott Basalion.  In the end our team finished as the runner up in the event.

Also very special congratulation goes to Domenic Bozzuto for winning the “Dean’s List” award at the event and being recognized as FIRST robotics’ most outstanding student out of the 64 team field.

Dear Parent & Guardians,

On Saturday, March 31, 2012 from 9:00AM to 12 Noon, the Superintendent’s Office will hold an open house for parents and the community.  Anyone who is interested may come to the Superintendent’s Office; 154 Center Street in the morning of the 31st to discuss individual student issues, educational initiatives, or the direction of the Wolcott Public Schools.  Community and parent open houses are held throughout the year.  The Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, and several Board of Members will be on hand to answer parental questions or just discuss educational issues with the community.  Appointments are not necessary.

As we start the first day of spring and summer-like weather, we all start to think about graduation and the end of the year.  Please note (as of today) the last day of school for students in Grade Kindergarten through 8th Grade (Alcott, Frisbie, Wakelee, Tyrrell) will be on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 with June 18th and June 19th being early dismissal days for those students on that Monday and Tuesday.  Tyrrell Middle School students will graduate on Tuesday, June 19th. Wolcott High School students will graduate on Wednesday, June 20, 2012.  Thank you and see you at graduation.

Milton Creagh is the former host of the national PBS series, Parenting Works and the author of Nobody Wants Your Child, a guide for parents who wish to teach their children the principles of successful living. Mr. Creagh or Big Milt as he is affectionately referred to, will provide an inspiring session for our K-12 parents/guardians about Drug Prevention and Awareness. Big Milt spoke last year to our TMS and WHS students and was awesome!

Dear Parents/Guardians:

At the end of March and beginning of April 2012, seventh and eighth grade students at Tyrrell Middle School and ninth through twelfth grade students at Wolcott High School will complete a survey prepared by the Search Institute entitled “Profile of Student Life: Attitudes and Behaviors”. The survey measures forty developmental assets that are essential building blocks for positive development. In addition, the survey measures problem-solving abilities and the extent to which students present any risk for involvement with drugs and alcohol. There are also three questions on the survey pertaining to sexual behavior. The survey will take approximately 40 minutes to administer.

This survey, completed anonymously by students in grades seven through twelve, will assist the schools in obtaining valuable baseline data. While the survey does not analyze data on a student-by-student basis, it does report patterns or trends in their responses providing information that will assist us in both updating our curriculum and planning student programs at our middle and high schools. In the fall we will hold a district community information evening to share the results. A copy of the survey will be available for your review in the main office of your child’s school from the 9th of March through the 5th of April during regular school hours.

Once again, this survey is completed anonymously (students’ names are not included) and students may opt not to answer any question(s). If you do not wish to have your child participate in completing this survey, please compete the enclosed Opt-Out form and return it to your child’s school by the March 26, 2012. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Jill E. Fontanella, LCSW, and LADC School Social Worker at 203-879-8157. Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.

Sincerely yours,

Principals

Dear Parents & Guardians,

The Wolcott Public Schools maintains a safe and secure learning environment for all students. State law requires all school employees (teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, custodians, secretaries, office staff, etc); be fingerprinted for national and state background checks. This process ensures high standards of ethical and moral conduct for all school personnel. Four years ago, the Wolcott Board of Education purchased the Lobby-Guard system which scans driver licenses and checks the federal and state sexual offender database to ensure compliance. All individuals with regular contact with students such as volunteers in our schools and chaperones for field trips are required to use this system to be cleared when supervising students. For the past 4 years, school administrators have conducted regular classroom walk-throughs and daily classroom visits to ensure our classrooms are safe and secure for an optimal learning environment. Each student's safety and well being is the first order of business for our school system. Thank You.

The Wolcott Public Schools is pleased to announce the results of the 2011 School & District Report Cards released by ConnCAN on December 1, 2011.  Every year, ConnCAN ranks more than 1,000 Connecticut public schools and 160 school districts based on student achievement in four categories.  The “report cards” are designed to help Connecticut families access information about their local schools and serve as effective advocates for their children.  Each school and district profile also provides student performance data that is based on the 2011 Connecticut Mastery Test for grades 3 through 8 and the 2011 Connecticut Academic Performance Test for grade 10.

We are pleased to announce that out of over 1,000 Connecticut schools:

  • Wolcott Elementary Schools ranked number 2 for Low-Income   Performance
  • Wolcott High School ranked number 3 for Low-Income Performance
  • Wakelee Elementary School ranked number 5 for Performance Gains
  • Wolcott Elementary Schools ranked number 13 for Overall Student Performance
